Ceramics (including Porcelain/ Dekton)
Sometimes the term porcelain and ceramic are used interchangeably, but essentially, they are very similar products, with porcelain being a subset of the ceramic family. Both are man-made products created from a clay called ‘China clay’ which is a combination of a mineral called Kaolinite, along with Silica, Feldspar, and other minerals.
These materials are put into a kiln together and fired at extremely high temperatures, which creates a dense material that is very strong. In fact, because of this process, some porcelain worktops are up to 30% stronger than granite.

Colours and Patterns
There are a wide variety of colours and patterns to choose from, which are computer generated and printed on the surface, allowing the manufacturers to quickly change designs to meet current design trends. It is UV light resistant, so direct and prolonged sunlight exposure will not discolour ceramic countertops.
It is a very hygienic surface and because it is non-porous, will not require regular sealing like natural stone does. It is heat, stain and scratch resistant, although we still advise the use of chopping boards to air on the side of caution. It also comes in thinner slabs – typically 6mm, 12mm and 20mm thickness options, although this varies by supplier.

Full Bodied Ceramics
Most ceramic worktops are only coloured/patterned on the surface; therefore, any unfortunate scratches or chips are likely to be more noticeable and can be more difficult to repair. Although ceramic is extremely strong, it is not totally indestructible and still requires some care and caution.
The edge profile choices are also limited to simple and square, due to its lack of full-bodied colouring. Also, any cut outs or drainer grooves would not have pattern flowing through them. However, some of our suppliers are now able to offer what they call ‘full-bodied’ or ‘vein-tech’ slabs, where some pattern IS running through the thickness of the slab! Ask us for more information.
